What level class should I be in?

At Stone Wave, we create classes for all levels of interest and experience. Our All Levels classes are beginner friendly and all are welcome. When you see Mixed Levels, that means that some experience is advised. Below are more details on Levels I, II and III.

If you are new to yoga, consider All Levels and Level 1 classes.

If you are looking to grow your practice, we recommend Mixed Levels, Level II and Level III.

We also offer specialty classes, such as ageless vitality geared towards the aging body, and prenatal yoga. See our full schedule HERE for more information.

Level 1

Beginner

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” These classes are great for everyone, especially those who are a little “yoga shy” or just beat themselves up all day. These classes tend to be gentler. We also offer slow flows, yin , stretch, and restorative classes that are at Level 1.

Most importantly, Level 1 classes are a safe space for you to explore your own limits and find what feels comfortable for your body.

Aside from the physical aspects, a beginner may not be familiar with the terms and concepts used in yoga. Don’t worry, the teacher will explain everything as you go along. Great for all levels.

  • What to expect in a Level 1 class:

    • A slow and steady pace

    • Clear instructions

    • A focus on learning the basic poses

    • A safe and welcoming environment

Level 2

Experienced Beginner (Beginnermediate)

Explore and build your practice. These practices are all about consistency. Safe and solid. Nothing too complicated, but will still offer a challenge if you're looking for it. The main focus is on connecting breath to your movement and beginning to flow through the poses, rather than holding them statically. You’ll also start to work on more challenging variations of the basic poses.

In some level 2 classes, you’ll familiarize with “bandhas,” or energy locks. These are used to control the flow of prana, or life force energy, in the body.

  • What to expect in a Level 2 class:

    • A faster pace and/or longer holds than Level 1

    • An introduction to hand mudras and pranayama

    • More challenging variations of basic poses

Level 3

Intermediate
(Advanced Welcomed)

These are for those who want a challenge. They will tend to be quicker moving and include some advanced posture.

In these classes, you’ll start to work on more challenging poses and inversions. You’ll also learn how to be more in tune with your own body and what it’s capable of. The focus is on deepening your practice and expanding your knowledge of yoga.

You’ll also focus on pushing yourself mindfully. What this means is that you’ll be challenged to step out of your comfort zone, but in a way that is safe and respectful of your own body.

  • What to expect in a Level 3 class:

    • A faster pace than Levels 1 and 2

    • More challenging poses

    • Inversions and arm balances

    • A deeper focus on breath work

    • Mindfully pushing your limits
